Fish Oil – A Terrific Lifestyle Choice

According to the World Health Organization, chronic degenerative conditions now represent the number one health threat globally. That means that, likely for the first time in history, more humans are losing their lives to chronic, and largely preventable, conditions than to trauma, infectious diseases, and even war.

Yet, chronic degenerative conditions are largely preventable as they are powerfully linked to lifestyle choices. Diets higher in sugar and carbohydrates coupled with lack of physical activity are strongly related to increased risk for some of the most common degenerative conditions, like type 2 diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease. Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. Continue reading

Whole Coffee Fruit Concentrate – Amping Up Growth Hormone for Brain Cells

These days it’s pretty common knowledge that we humans are constantly replenishing our brain cells, a process known as neurogenesis. But keep in mind that the first scientific publication that demonstrated our capacity to grow new brain cells was only recently published, in 1998. To be sure, back when I was in medical school in the early 1980s, it was pretty much accepted as dogma that humans totally lacked this ability. We were told that you had a given number of brain cells and that after around age 18, it was pretty much downhill from there.

Neurogenesis, growing new brain cells, is happening in your brain right now, and this process will continue for the rest of your life. But the revelation is that we can actually enhance this process by making smart lifestyle choices. Continue reading

Finding the Right Probiotic

Visit a grocery store or vitamin shoppe today, and you’ll instantly be overwhelmed by the myriad probiotic supplements available to you. With so many different types of probiotic strains and different brands, it may be hard to determine which is best for you.

My advice: focus on the five key Lactobaccilus and Bifidobacterium strains I identify as key in Brain Maker, and look for a supplement that has anywhere from 10-50 billion units/capsule.

Watch this video for more advice on probiotics, including the best conditions for consumption.

Starting the Day with Supplements

While we can use food to nurture and protect our bodies and our brains, supplements play an important role in preventing inflammation and helping us achieve total health. In both Grain Brain and Brain Maker, in addition to laying out the lifestyle plan you should follow to avoid brain diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, I mention some of the most important supplements you can take for your health.

However, I’m often asked what my own daily routine is. Well, today I’m here to tell you.

Ruth Ann N.

I’m an RN. I ordered Grain Brain after seeing you on FOX & Friends.

My husband had ignored my suggestions that he lose weight for years. The last week of November and first week of December 2013 he was going to have cataract surgery. I suggested he try the low-carb, gluten-free diet because his blood sugar a year before had been pre-diabetic. He was concerned about the chance of infection and loss of sight so he agreed.

During the week before Thanksgiving and the week after, he lost 10 pounds! His 2-hour post-prandial blood sugar was 98.

DHA Supplementation during pregnancy, nursing

Why Breastfeeding Mothers Should Take DHA

It is estimated that in America today more than 6 million of our school-aged children have been given a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder. What’s even more disturbing is the revelation that close to 70% of these children are taking potentially dangerous, mind-altering medications to help them pay attention.

As it turns out, research shows that if mothers take even a low dosage of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA during the first few months of breastfeeding, there is a significant increase in the ability of their children to pay attention when they are examined as they enter school. Research shows that when children receive breast milk from mothers who were taking a single, 200mg capsule of DHA, attention scores were much better when compared to the children of non-supplemented mothers when attention tests were administered at age 5 years. Other studies have clearly confirmed that the level of DHA in breast milk increases as much as 2-fold following mother’s supplementation.

These findings lend further support for the understanding that supplementation of DHA is important not just during pregnancy, but while nursing as well.

Daily Dose of DHA

If you follow my work, you know that I strongly advocate for making sure that your diet includes a hearty dose of omega-3 fats, the healthy ones we’ve replaced in our current diet with omega-6 fats. For me, one of the most important omega-3 fats is Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and that’s why fish oil or algae-derived DHA is so important.

For starters, DHA is a valuable anti-inflammatory, and you all know how dangerous inflammation is to our brains and our bodies. A recent study found that macrophages (a type of white blood cell) use DHA to produce maresins, which fight inflammation. Since our bodies encounter inflammation almost daily, it’s important to always make sure we’ve got enough omega-3 in our system to help our bodies quiet down these flare ups.

But the key reason that DHA has become such a darling of medical researchers lately is that it triggers the production of BDNF, meaning that it’s DHA which kickstarts the growth of new neurons in our brain, leading to improved memory. Continue reading
