In this section we will keep you up to date on all of Dr. Perlmutter’s speaking engagements, both public and professional. A leader in the field of preventive medicine, Dr. Perlmutter lectures frequently on the connection between gluten intolerance and brain diseases.

The awareness of the role of our resident microbes just seems to be exploding. I’ve recently learned that the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City has just opened an exhibit called The Secret World Inside You that is dedicated to the incredibly important role the vast array of microbes (the microbiome) living within each and every one of us plays in our health.
The focus of the exhibit seems to be dedicated to the notion that we are each an actual interdependent “ecosystem.” This is certainly a new way of thinking about the human body.
The descriptions of the exhibit indicate that it is quite revealing in terms of correlating the human microbiome with things like immune function, detoxification, and regulating metabolism, using animations and other visual presentations. Can’t wait!
On June 18, I had a chance to visit with my good friend Dr. Dale Bredesen at the Buck Institute for Age Research in Novato, California. I was in town to attend a special event for Brain Maker put on by the Buck Institute, where Dr. Bredesen and I lectured on the microbiome and its relationship to brain health.
I’m happy to report that not only was there a person in every seat in the room, but that the Buck Institute went so far as to livestream the event so that a recording would be made available for those who could not attend. Enjoy.
On the day we launched Brain Maker, I thought it would be fun to get to speak to you all in real-time and be able to answer some of your questions on the book, the microbiome, gut health, and more. Utilizing the tool Periscope, we were able to having a dynamic discussion on a number of topics, but important to me is that these were the topics you all wanted to know about. We saw lots of questions on subjects such as probiotics, coffee/wine consumption and C. diff.
You can watch the recording of my Periscope here now, and I encourage you to leave your thoughts. Should we do this again?
I am extremely honored and delighted to have had the opportunity to be interviewed by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, PhD for the first video interview on Synthesis. In this interview, Dr. Bland and I explore a functional medicine approach to both preservation of brain health as well as enhancement of function.
I strongly recommend that you consider subscribing to Functional Medicine Update which is published monthly and is clearly the best way to stay current in terms of advances in functional and integrative medicine.
Just last week, I had the pleasure of joining Kelly Ripa and guest host Anderson Cooper on LIVE with Kelly & Michael to talk about Grain Brain. While my segment was short, I like to think it was packed with actionable information that you can use to help eat your way to a better brain. Remember, go gluten-free, and low-carb, and load up on healthy fats, and you’ll be well on your road to a healthier tomorrow.
Tomorrow (Thursday, May 8th) on the Dr. Oz Show, I’ll be discussing the very real threat that gluten poses to brain health and function. I’m actually going to bring along a patient whose life was pretty much destroyed by a devastating movement disorder that involved her face. Tune in to watch what happened to her when she went gluten-free!
Gluten induces inflammation, and this may well be happening in all humans! Inflammation is a pivotal mechanism involved in all brain degenerative disorders. I’ll demonstrate exactly how this happens, so tune in. Should be very instructive.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a round table discussion focused on the topic of statin medications used to lower cholesterol. As many of you are now aware, a new set of “guidelines” developed by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology was recently issued instructing healthcare practitioners as to when to prescribe this group of drugs.
Incredibly, under these guidelines almost half of the American population between the ages of 40 to 75 and virtually all men over age 60 would qualify for the use of this potentially dangerous class of medications.
Between the continued press for Grain Brain, ongoing regional media appearances and the momentum of my public TV special BRAINCHANGE, I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to share the lessons of Grain Brain with an ever-expanding audience. Many of you who are regular readers of my blog have tuned in for those appearances, and for that I thank you. That’s why I wanted to let you know about an exciting interview I have coming up tomorrow.
Tomorrow, Friday, I’ll be a guest on FOX News’ morning show Fox & Friends. I’m excited to sit down and chat Grain Brain with the shows anchors, especially on a Friday. Hopefully, those who tune in will become curious about how diet impacts brain health, and will use the opportunity (and the weekend) to pick up a copy of Grain Brain and start making some changes. I’m on quite early, 6:45AM ET, so if you plan to tune in, be sure to set that alarm, your brain will thank you. I bet it would like a cup of coffee while you tune in as well.
