“If you could make just three simple changes in your life to prevent, or even reverse, memory loss and other brain disorders, wouldn’t you?” – Dr. David Perlmutter

In this new and empowering 90-minute special, Dr. Perlmutter reveals just what those changes are, and how you can begin the path to better brain health today. Airing across the country, BRAINCHANGE is a follow-up to the lessons and information Dr. Perlmutter has shared in Grain Brain, his #1 New York Times bestselling book about our body’s silent killers: wheat, carbohydrates and sugar. Dr. Perlmutter overturns many of the assumptions we’ve made about nutrition for the past few decades, and shares with you the science that backs up his findings (also available here on this website).

For information on upcoming airings, please visit PBS’ online TV schedule.

      • Marianne Soldner

        online yet ?:)

      • savontb82

Yes, please put this video online! I read Grain Brain shortly after it was released and was completely blown away. Since then, I have been encouraging everyone I know to buy/read it. I happened to catch Brain Change on tv a few weeks ago and thought it was the perfect explanation for the content in the book. I would love to be able to direct my mother to watch the video on your site because she has not taken the time to read the book yet, and the information is vitally important. I’m pretty good at explaining it now, but you do it so perfectly.

      • Silvia Regina

Dr. David, could your videos have subtitles for deaf people like me? That would be fantastic!

        • David Perlmutter

I don’t have control over that Silvia, but that is an excellent suggestion.

          • Silvia Regina

  • David Perlmutter

Hi all: This is currently a “test airing” for other PBS stations to see the performance of my program and judge if they want to pick it up as well. So, if you want it aired in your area, call your friends in the Bay Area and tell them to tune in!

  • Janine Lex

Thank you so much Dr. Perlmutter for your focus and dedication to getting this message to a broad base of the population. Hopefully this will air nationwide soon!!

    • Kate Rudolph

Agreed and second that, Janine Lex! Great coverage on PBS this week here in OH! So refreshing to hear this message even though it’s “against the grain”!

  • Darlene

would like to see it on wskg in Penn and NY state

      • Mary

My husband and I have read your book and it has been an eye-opener. Our 40 year old son has epilepsy caused by flickering lights, and has been on very strong meds since about the age of 11. We were told when he was young he would most likely outgrow this, but he never has. Is it possible wheat could be causing this?

  • Cheryl

I live in the Cleveland area but do not see a listing for this program!

    • David Perlmutter

So much easier to do when you have a mom who has uncontrolled diabetes and at 68 was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Six years later it breaks my heart to see what the disease has taken from her.

Wish I could view in Virginia. Keep pushing and driving this awareness. We have your back!

  • WOW! Whowknow?

My son, who has returned after 6 yrs. in the military, was experiencing episodes of being prone on the couch, writhing in pain, high fever, severe abdominal pain, and subsequent massive and frequent bouts of diarrhea. This went on for about 18 months, with over 45 trips to the VA Hospital in Denver, Co. He has endured numerous colonoscopies, gallbladder pictures and testing for gallbladder activities, liver biopsies, and upper and lower GI series. We were thinking maybe he had picked up some kind of parasite on his overseas travels.
One day, out of the blue- a GI Dr. suggested we try a gluten free diet, just to see if it might help. The GI Dr. said we have no indication of a gluten or wheat allergy, but just try the diet, as we are out of things to do with this boy, and all his tests come back negative. After months of thinking our son had some major medical problem, he has had wonderful success on a gluten free diet. He can eat, and not have diarrhea within 10 minutes of eating. He is not longer prone on the couch writhing in abdominal pain, with high fevers. His blood count shows he is not anemic anymore. How does a 6ft 250lb buff sailor get to the point of being anemic, anyways? This boy went thru all the Navy physical training and 6 yrs. of service just fine. When he returned to us is when his problems started. Seems our American diet if full of gluten products. We dove heavily into this gluten issue and studied and learned all we can about it. For our son, it was a matter of life or death. I am so happy to say, that now- he is thriving well and doing well on a gluten free diet, and his mind is sharper than ever. Yes, we experienced the brain numbing effects of gluten. this super smart boy is now enrolled in an engineering double degree at School of Mines, Co (he did nuke engineering in the Navy). it was very hard to see gluten take a fit young man and his mind down to a level of destruction as it did, we were desperate to find a solution. Going gluten free has been the best choice we have ever made. This works well for my husband and myself also, as we wish to avoid the mind numbing effects of wheat overdose that so often happens, and can get complicated for our brains as we age.
We learned a valuable lesson, and are so glad we did not loose our son, or had any major surgery to remedy this situation.
Strange thing is- although the Navy does not serve a gluten free diet, he was choosing to leave off the breads, cakes, pies, gravies, and that combined with the rigorous workouts of military life, has helped him stay slim and trim.
I an so very thankful for your research and study in this area, as all of us in America can use this knowledge and better ourselves thru a gluten free diet.
This gluten free lifestyle, combined with no foods containing acrylamide, makes a very good choice for us all. To bad that in America, we are so subject to popular and false advertisements and misleading food packaging labels. Here is a recent discovery to us- carmel coloring in foods, do indeed contain gluten. Thank goodness for you and your truth about the wheat in our diets. And thank goodness for celiac.com website, so we can check all foods.
    Continue the good work!

    • Teri

Dr. Perlmutter, I watched your series on Channel WHYY last night. I am a school nurse and also follow the GF diet for Celiac dx. I ordered your Brain Change Master Pkg combo because there is a wealth of information that needs to get out that I believe without a doubt can change our lives and give us better health. Someone quoted: ”
Food is our medicine and Medicine is our Food.” A beautiful Truth!

    • Robert

have him watch this informative sales pitch from Keybiotics….the one thing he may be missing from his diet is a balance of good vs. bad bacteria in his gut… In addition to the gluten free, good bacteria intake is vital to his good health.

  • Adrienne

Oh please, NYC must see you!

How about a Seattle showing? This is the perfect market! The article about your book on the Atlantic Monthly will get a lot of notice, although the title and photo were not aligned–a photo of a sugar-filled, carb-loaded cupcake with the title mentioning gluten? I know the word “gluten” gets a lot more attention than “carbs,” which is why they may have done it.

I agree with the others. This is the era of Netflix and Hulu and online for your target market–even if you have to pay for an episode as one does with Frontline episodes, you’ll get lots of eyeballs if you can get it online. Or buy a DVD. Thank you

    Howard Hardy.

    • CIC

Howard, I’ve been a Pharmacist for 30 + years. I try to avoid prescription medication at all costs. Too often, prescriptions beget more prescriptions, many doctors don’t have an “exit strategy” to prevent prescribing drugs that cause addictions.
Regarding prescriptions for Alzheimer’s, they are uniformly ineffective. Prevention is key with lifestyle changes not only with diet but with sleep/fasting cycles, etc. Exercise, social connections, avoiding inflammation and triggers. There is another Neurologist, Dr. Dale Bredesen who I knew at UCSF, who has been looking at MULTIPLE factors (beyond just diet) to reduce risks for Alzheimer’s disease. There is no single “silver bullet” drug or modality when it comes to brain health.

Can’t PBS just record it and sell the DVD themselves…with proper profit-sharing for Dr. Perlmutter? Of course, PBS might be wanting to use it to entice folks to join KPBS, but seems it is not right to make needy folks–who already know about it— wait, possibly a LONG time. Seems sharing the information both ways –concurrently–would make the most sense (and be most ‘humane’?). ?? Thanks for maybe considering it at least (BTW, we are anxiously awaiting arrival of your book from Amazon 🙂 )

  • Pablo

The infomercial-style presentation has to be fodder for Perlmutter detractors. (It’s the format of snake-oil salesman – in this case, poorly adapted to some noteworthy science.) I really think this information would be better received in documentary format.

  • Christa1970

Is there anywhere on this site to find the blood tests that you recommend in your Brain Change presentation? I am going to see my neurologist at the University of Miami tomorrow and I would like to request him to help me get started.

Will we be able to host family gatherings with the traditional high carb desserts and fancy breads? Much tradition seems headed for the crusher. Can someone help me find family joy in this new way?

I’m fascinated by the findings in your book. I’m concerned about the hidden ingredients that may contain gluten. You listed brown rice syrup as one of them, and I’m finding that it’s in some gluten free products. Is this harmful to us? how do we go about educating these companies to put out healthier more honest gluten free products?

Dr. Perlmutter, I am a 17 year old girl and am already one week into this new lifestyle change of a LCHF diet. However, my Parents seem to be concerned about this change, they think its not suitable for a growing teenager and that it could affect my health if I try this too early on. Is this true or could this actually benefit me if I avoid the dangerous nature of gluten and carbs so early on?

Ref: Grain Brain, page 92 says “The bile salts secreted by
the gallbaldder, which are needed for the digestion of fat and, therefore, the absorption
of fat soluble vitamins like A, D, and K, are made of cholesterol.”

Please explain how I can cope with your book as I had surgery

Do you have bile salts I can take as a supplantment.

I posted somewhere else. In an amazing book sugar is not completely bad. It is in grown in some very hot country’s where it keeps moisture in. It has 40% more calcium in its raw form. They did not have rotten teeth. It may be the chemicals sprayed on and the GMOs and the refining off the sugar. Our drive for sugar may also do to the chemicals as they drive up the need for sugar to store the chemicals in the fat. Even animals will do that. Fat is a better storehouse than anywhere else. Our brains are not only made of fat. There was a saying a long time ago. the brains need b vitamins as well and these without the glucose is like a car with no fuel. so where is all going wrong. One smart women suggested it is the heavy metals which I agree. Now most of the plants are watered with alluminum that goes into the soil and into the plants. Deep water wells pull up inorganic chemicals that should not be consumed adding more to the plants. That certain peoples brains have more of an affinity for it. It affects my mother and not my father. Then again my mother sprayed more chemicals to kill the weeds. Since one in 50 boys are now born autistic. We have to look much deeper. It used to be one in 10,000. So the pesticides, fungicides. It is now into the 3 generation since JFk was about to put in a pesticide act and radiation act. Who can we blame. we have polluted the air, water, soil. Again I hope that god will
forgive us all. Or maybe it is the chemicals on all the clothes. What rhymes with Doctor Jekyll and mr hyde. It is Formaldehyde. Or maybe it is the David Sukukis dirty dozen. We are all to blame…we thought we were so smart.
Since zinc, manganese, and copper. are depleted by golf course chemicals and zinc b6 and b12 by soy. Well zinc is to think and immunity. Manganese is the hard drive. I don’t mean the driver. and golf courses are the biggest recreation sport. We are all going to war and have not put a foot out of our own country. No wonder the world is going to pot. Happy Hemp…Manganese in its good form. Manganese is called the love element and if you have not seen a diazonon pesticide rage….well watch out. It is all around us. In the horses, dogs, people.

I only caught a few minutes of your special last night on PBS in DC and was instantly interested since I am a diabetic and function best on a low carb (20 grams or less) diet. My doctor assures me that once I have lost enough weight the insulin resistance should start going away and I can then add some carbs back in. Is your book about low-carb eating or just gluten free? I plan on buying it because you mentioned carbs affect the brain and I would like to keep mentally active into my old age.

    • David Perlmutter

It’s about both Karren. Grain Brain focuses on eliminating grains and gluten from the diet, and in the process moving us to a LCHF lifestyle as well.

I was wondering what studies, research and test results are available for your supplements that you offer. I am very interested but I need to see completed research to support both your findings and results! I am trained as a Clinical Psychologist/Cognitive Behavioral approach but very much in-tune with the benefits of medications as well, including supplements! Please help! And do you offer a complete program package and special seminars in Naples.
Thank you and your presentation is focused, powerful, well written and professional. I am extremely interested in learning more and better managing my own nutrition and health issues. Thank you Doctor! Kevin

    Dr. Perlmutter,
Dr. Carolyn Dean’s product RnA Drops are made from sprouted barley seeds. Barley is a gluten grain, however the processing of barley to make RnA Drops results in a negative gluten reading on the EZ Gluten Elisa Test. This negative gluten test means there are less than 10 ppm of gluten in the RnA Drops, which is the gluten-free standard adopted by AOAC, the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists. My question is. Are you familiar with the RnA Drops, and if you are, do you agree they can be trusted to be gluten free?

Dr. Perlmutter — I have been told that my gallbladder is not functioning well (due to low HIDA scan results – 17%) and am also having symptoms like quite a bit of stomach gas/discomfort/ and referred right back pain (left of and a little lower than the shoulder blade). Does that mean that I really should NOT be trying the high-fat diet? Everyone is telling me (doctors included) that you must eat a low fat diet with a diseased gallbladder (or if I get it taken out). Feeling like a catch22…eat high fat (following Dr. Perlmutter) and eat low fat for my gallbladder condition. Any insight?

  • Todd

Dr. Perlmutter – A question about eating the ‘high fat’ diet and someone with gallbladder problems/disease. I have been told I have a poorly functioning and potentially diseased gallbladder (HIDA scan – 17%)…also having continual and long lasting stomach gas/discomfort, brain fog, as well as referred back pain (right side, slightly left and below shoulder blade). Does that mean I can/should NOT eat the high fat diet recommended? Or does that depend on whether I get the gallbladder taken out first? A little confused by the guidance from others (including dr.’s) to definitely eat low fat and high fiber for a bad gallbladder and your guidance that high fat diets are good. Feel like I’m in a bit of a catch 22. FYI – I have been eating virtually gluten free along with lots of ‘good’ fats for a couple of months now and don’t feel like the stomach/gallbladder situation and other symptoms are improving at all…same at best, if not feeling worse. Any insight/guidance would be GREATLY appreciated?

    • David Perlmutter
      • Todd

Thanks so much for the reply Dr. Perlmutter. Insightful article…nice to see the diet is tolerated well after that kind of surgery. I’m struggling mightily with the decision to get the gallbladder out…hearing that many patients see no improvement in symptoms after. At the same time, seeing no progress in my symptoms after following a diet (and supplements) very similar to the one you recommend for a couple months now makes me very suspicious that the gallbladder might be the culprit of my strange and continual symptoms.
By the way, I don’t know if you do this, but any chance you could recommend a Dr. in the Dallas, Texas area who might help treat me overall for the ‘gut’ issues…who might be like-minded to you (preferably an MD who practices more functional/integrative medicine), if you know what I mean? Other than the Gastro specialist I’ve seen who are very traditional, I feel like I’m going it alone and really feeling like I need more intensive attention and wholistic guidance. Would even consider traveling to a ‘clinic/facility’ I could check into for a while to get another opinion & get the ‘gut clean’…if such places exist. Blessings to you!!!

My sister, 50 years old, has had Spinocerebellar ataxia, SCA (due to olivopontocerebeller degengeration) for 25 years and is fairly advanced (uses a walker and cannot feed herself). She said she went gluten-free for 3 weeks and her shaking got worse. I don’t know what she ate during this time, but I don’t imagine her approach was optimal, since she normally had a nutrient deficient diet before going gluten-free. I have convinced her to improve her diet and she has made efforts to do so with less processed food. Do you have any advice or anecdotes you can share so I can encourage her to try gluten-free again. I just sent her your Grain Brain book and pointed her to your Brainchange airings. Is there some aspect of your approach or recommended foods that would apply more to sufferers of ataxia? I am also encouraging her to try cannabis oil high in cannabinoids (I have read they are neuroprotective and have been observed to control neurotransmitters and have helped children with dravets syndrome). I would appreciate your opinion. Doctors like you who think for themselves and don’t reflexively treat symptoms with pills are godsends. THANK YOU!

Question…I am nearly done listening to the audio book of Grain Brain. I may encounter this answer before finishing, but am worried about one aspect. Increasing the fat for me is no problem as I love all the things, grass-fed beef, avocado, etc. But, I had my gall bladder removed 10 years ago. At that time, I was told that low fat was the way to go and I’ve kept to that pretty much. Will this increase any issues for a person without a gall bladder? I remember that the function of that organ is to break down fat. Any help you can give before I dive into the plan would be great.

Hi, I just watched your presentation on Public TV. Your comments about Cholesterol were surprising. So, Cholesterol is good for the brain. But is it bad for the heart? If someone has a Cholesterol level above 200 – is it OK? From what point does it become not OK? Your response would be appreciated, thank you.

    • David Perlmutter

I don’t believe total cholesterol, in isolation, is an accurate barometer of health.

      • STS

Of course it is not on its own an accurate barometer of health, but you said it was good and pointed to some complications of using medications to reduce cholesterol. It leaves the question of cholesterol level wide open, and is really confusing.

Just had my 1st episode of major depression. It runs in my family. Since around 18 I suffered from panic attacks that lasted about 20 minutes. I use to get those every once in a while. I am 31 now and about 4 months ago I was getting them everyday for a week and then one day I felt really weird. I knew after a few days I was depressed. It got worse every week. I have it every single day! It took over my brain. I just got on Celexa (antidepressant) 3 weeks ago and feel like Im in another world. Nothing seems real. I don’t feel or see people like how I use to. Zero moments of clarity. I hate it! I read Grain Brain after months of my aunt telling me to and am definitely going to see someone about doing a panel on me to see what I’m sensitive to. Depression took my mom’s life and my sister suffers from it bad. I will not let it do this to me! I’m so glad there is something else besides antidepressants that could cure me from this awful illness! I hate to accept this illness because of genetics. Nope, not me! I’m getting to the bottom of this, especially so it doesn’t pass onto my children. Thank you for all your BRAIN help! I will return once I start my change to let you know my success with it 🙂

I’m just finishing Grain Brain and have dropped the carbs!!’ Question: Dr. David, you say avoid soy yogurt but I’m assuming that’s because most have fillers (carbs). I’ve been making my own soy yogurt for years with unsweetened organic filler free soy milk. I’ve added many probiotics and it comes out thick. I shall it sour power. Is that OK for the very low carb diet?

    • David Perlmutter

Feel free to ask them here on my website. Will do my best to answer.

      • Karen Holt

Dr Perlmutter, I posted my questions on this discussion, thank you for offering to answer them. I am wondering whether they have been seen or did I post them in the incorrect spot?

      • Karen Holt

        Dr Perlmutter,
I am not sure if I am posting the questions in the correct place so I shall post them here in response to your comment.

Thank you Dr Perlmutter for agreeing to answer my questions post reading (devouring in fact) your new book.
        The questions I have are:
        1. On the subject of PROTEIN You recommend very moderate amounts of protein for adults up to the age of 65 – I think it was about 46gms for women and 54gm for men from memory but then as many others have recommended increasing it after 65 – do you have any specific recommendations as to what it should be raised to? And if one fast – either alternate day fasting or 3 36 hour fasts per week should one eat more protein on the eating days so it averages at the recommendation over the week? Finally on the subject of protein I have read some new research saying that a minimum amount (I think it was >30gms) needs to be eaten at one sitting for it to be used for new muscle synthesis not just repair and maintenance. Do you have any comment on this?
        2. On the subject of PROBIOTICS. If one has been following your recommendations (and others of a similar ilk) for over four years and religiously took daily probiotic supplementation for at least 3 years, hasn’t had any antibiotics for 2 years and eats home made coconut yoghurt, kefir, kimchi (your recipe) sauerkraut and occasionally a low sugar kombucha is it necessary to continue the probiotic supplementation daily or would a course once or twice a year be sufficient? Or is it not necessary at all?
        3. Last question on the topic of ACACIA FIBRE. Similar to the above if one is eating quite a lot of fibre form vegetables and quite a lot of prebiotic fibre daily – asparagus, onion, garlic, leek as well as all the brassica family of vegetables would you still recommend daily acacia fibre and if so why?

        Many thanks,

        • David Perlmutter

Even eating fermented foods, and other foods rich in probiotics, I take a probiotic supplement daily. I want to make sure I’m getting a diversity of gut flora into my micobiome. The same goes for prebiotic fibers, though the focus there is on getting enough grams of prebiotic fiber.

          • Karen Holt

Thank you for responding Dr Perlmutter – we shall incorporate a good probiotic again as funds allow and we are taking acacia fibre (not easy to obtain in Oz) in the morning. The protein question is a tricky one isn’t it? I suppose the best is to listen to our bodies and keep an eye on our fasting glucose and lean body mass.
Do you have any opinion on the greater than 24 hour fasting debate? That is does it deplete lean body mass?

  • Chris Frochaux

I received a DVD and invited a few friends to watch it… but it was an empty case: no DVD inside. I just filled the form online with my Amazon order and I’m waiting for instructions about how to access it online.

I can’t access and watch Brain Change! every time it keeps asking me to enter my details. I bought the book 16/11/2016

I don’t understand why you folks don’t just fix this problem with the Brain Change video. It’s frustrating for us and seems like either sloppy business practice or simple deceptiveness.

Dr. Perlmutter-I have read Grain Brain but I am really overwhelmed on how to get started. Is there any advice on the steps to start gluten free? Thank you!

Start by cleaning out your kitchen, and stocking up on the right foods! Check out the “Eat” tab on my website for more.

    Dr. Perlmutter,
Thank you for giving us hope. I have read your books, read Brain Maker twice. Your research is absolutely amazing. You are a true Pioneer! I live in South Florida. Can you suggest any local Doctors that practice your type of treatment?

    Hi Dr. Perlmutter-
I’ve been recently diagnosed with Lichen Planpilaris (auto immune) that attacks my hair follicles. I received steroid solution, scalp shots and soon a steroid pill to fight the AI. I feel it’s a gluten sensitivity as every time I eat some form of bread my scalp seems to tingle or twitch. Any thoughts on my condition? Thank you.
