A year and some months ago, I weighed in at 244 pounds. I had started cutting out sugar, but I really needed help with a healthy diet. My son-in-law told me about Grain Brain, and I ordered it immediately!
I started changing my diet right away. The weight just flew off of me and I felt so much better. In time I began to notice the change in my memory too!
I suffer from severe osteoarthritis of the spine and just about every other bone. I really needed to lose that weight and learn how to eat the right things. I will never change my new eating habits!

Since childhood we’ve been told to eat our broccoli, a request usually based on the claim that “it’s good for you.” Though we now have substantial research to back up this statement, new data from Johns Hopkins scientists may be one of the best reasons to keep this vegetable on the top of our shopping lists.
Recently, broccoli has been the subject of many papers on cancer prevention. Containing a unique chemical called sulforaphane, broccoli helps fight off malignant cells in the body. But now, researchers have taken this property one step further. This fascinating data measures the ability of broccoli to detoxify the body of cancer-inducing chemicals before they get a chance to cause problems.
In this new study, published in the journal Cancer Prevention, scientists selected participants living in an area of China with substantial air pollution. They first assessed the amount of pollutant found in the participant’s urine, and then assigned some participants to consume a beverage made of broccoli sprouts. Afterward, the scientists found that people who drank the broccoli beverage were able to get rid of substantially higher levels of the environmental pollutants than those who did not. Inflammation is a process with which we are all familiar. Whether from an insect bite or an arthritic joint, we associate inflammation with the typical observations of pain, redness, and swelling as well as loss of function.
In Grain Brain, as well as my recent PBS program, BrainChange, I described that this very same process, inflammation, is actually a pivotal player in such diverse brain conditions as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and even autism.
That said, the most fundamental take home message of all my media outreach is to convince everyone willing to listen that you’ve got to do everything possible to reduce inflammation. And that means a diet rich in inflammation-reducing foods like healthful fats, minimal in carbohydrates and strictly gluten-restricted.
Like Linda, many people don’t realize just how much improvement there can be to the overall state of your health just by going gluten-free. – Dr. Perlmutter
For over ten years, I have had a hand tremor. In the last year the tremor became very annoying – I couldn’t text smoothly on my phone or apply eyeliner. My doctor asked if I wanted to be tested for Parkinson’s Disease. I postponed that option because I watched my mother decline from the disease and saw the toll the side effects of her medication took on her. Just a few months ago, I glanced at a copy of Grain Brain in the store, happened to see the section on treating movement disorders, read the book in a week and began my own Grain Brain lifestyle.
As I hoped, my tremor improved in the first week, but I was surprised and delighted at other conditions which cleared up! No more embarrassing gas and constipation! No more Raynaud’s symptoms in my toes! No more arthritis symptoms in my feet! Weirdest of all, my fingernails are growing in stronger than they have been in a long time. I am pleased and excited that, after just turning 60, some “old age symptoms” are gone.
Outside of the wonderful story about a woman who took back control of her health, the fact that this information was shared between groups of people who wanted to help others is what makes the story Judy shares so compelling. – Dr. Perlmutter
Every day I congratulate my sister in law on her miracle: that her rheumatoid arthritis is in remission, or maybe even cured! Let me back up and explain how it happened.
My daughter works with a woman who also has/had RA and she went on a gluten-free diet and, after a short period of time, all her symptoms diminished and she was able to stop taking all her medications. My daughter, so impressed, asked her friend to meet with my sister-in-law and explain what had happened to her symptoms simply by changing her diet. After a period of time my sister-in-law decided to try gluten-free and see if this could also help her. It did! Her hands, badly crippled, are free of pain and she is able to do so much more with them than she had for a long time. She was reluctant to believe her good luck but after several months in remission she is willing to believe that it is indeed in permanent remission. This is a woman who had RA for over twenty years and had gone through all the drugs used to treat It. There were no more treatments available to her other than some new medications that might cause serious side effects, which could possibly be death.
Cheryl struggled with chronic pain for years before learning about the benefits of a grain-free and gluten-free diet. I’m glad to know that the release of a Grain Brain can bring information to those like Cheryl, who are desperate for answers. – Dr. Perlmutter
I’ve suffered with arthritis since age 16. To manage the pain, I would receive injections in my shoulders and knees to help manage the pain. Crying, I would wake up in the morning due to throbbing pains. In the years since, I’ve had 2 knee replacements and must start each day with Ibuprofen. I couldn’t walk without glucosamine/chondroitin.
It all comes back to inflammation. – Dr. Perlmutter
I have never had a problem with wheat (or any food for that matter) but ever since my late 20s I have suffered from arthritis. Doctors put me on Naproxen and I’ve taken that or Nabumatone for 30 years.
At this stage in my life, I’ve decided I want to lose some weight. Now that I’m menopausal, I was put on a strict program by a nutritionist. This program had no grains (or non-fruit sugars) at all for the first 2 months. After about 2 weeks I was forgetting to take the anti-inflammatory meds since I didn’t feel the pain that usually indicated I needed them. After 30 days, I was practically pain-free.
I was reminded that before my brain tumor surgery my doctor told me that my inflammatory markers were through the roof. I went back in to be tested after this and they were normal. All those years of suffering and medications! I lost 30 pounds in 4 months and feel like I’m 15 years younger.
