My wife and I are 60 years old. We saw your program, BRAINCHANGE, in March 2014 and subsequently purchased Grain Brain and made the dramatic shift to a gluten-free, grain-free approach to eating. We emptied the pantry of any gluten-related items. The major improvement is that, after three months, I no longer take a daily iron supplement and have an increased feeling of energy. My iron and ferritin readings are now in the normal range.
Both of us have experienced an amazing new sense of clear-headedness. We know how it feels to be “fuzzy headed” or have a “foggy brain” and those feelings have vanished. Even though we are very fit and regularly exercise, we both lost some more weight as a result of the reduction in carbs and we increased our protein.
My mother had and died with Alzheimer’s and I am willing to bet that this approach to eating will help me significantly reduce my chances of getting the disease. I also believe it will significantly increase my chances of watching my grandchildren grow and be part of their lives for a very long time.
Having recently seen your special BRAINCHANGE, and finding it very interesting, I wanted to share my story and the long road to my diagnosis of celiac disease.
As a teenager, I experienced migraines with visual aura, which became more frequent as I got older, and with no root-cause found. I had some occasional stomach/GI problems, but nothing indicating celiac. In my thirties the migraines became more frequent, almost a daily problem, and I also had become anemic, and diagnosed with ataxia. It wasn’t until I saw a liver specialist, who did a large number of blood tests, that I was tested for celiac disease tested. In March 2010, I was diagnosed with celiac.
So I’ve been on a strict gluten-free diet for over 3 years now, and those migraines with aura haven’t occurred, my balance is fine, and my liver enzymes have been normal.
Inflammation is a process with which we are all familiar. Whether from an insect bite or an arthritic joint, we associate inflammation with the typical observations of pain, redness, and swelling as well as loss of function.
In Grain Brain, as well as my recent PBS program, BrainChange, I described that this very same process, inflammation, is actually a pivotal player in such diverse brain conditions as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and even autism.
That said, the most fundamental take home message of all my media outreach is to convince everyone willing to listen that you’ve got to do everything possible to reduce inflammation. And that means a diet rich in inflammation-reducing foods like healthful fats, minimal in carbohydrates and strictly gluten-restricted.
Outside of the wonderful story about a woman who took back control of her health, the fact that this information was shared between groups of people who wanted to help others is what makes the story Judy shares so compelling. – Dr. Perlmutter
Every day I congratulate my sister in law on her miracle: that her rheumatoid arthritis is in remission, or maybe even cured! Let me back up and explain how it happened.
My daughter works with a woman who also has/had RA and she went on a gluten-free diet and, after a short period of time, all her symptoms diminished and she was able to stop taking all her medications. My daughter, so impressed, asked her friend to meet with my sister-in-law and explain what had happened to her symptoms simply by changing her diet. After a period of time my sister-in-law decided to try gluten-free and see if this could also help her. It did! Her hands, badly crippled, are free of pain and she is able to do so much more with them than she had for a long time. She was reluctant to believe her good luck but after several months in remission she is willing to believe that it is indeed in permanent remission. This is a woman who had RA for over twenty years and had gone through all the drugs used to treat It. There were no more treatments available to her other than some new medications that might cause serious side effects, which could possibly be death.
