Without a doubt, one of the most highly debated topics in health and wellness centers on the safety or risk associated with GMO foods. Today, Austin Perlmutter M.D. joins me to interview Jeffrey Smith, who has, for the past two decades, done his best to raise public awareness as to the possible health-related concerns of genetically modifying our foodstuffs. You know it’s almost trendy now to talk about GMO foods and avoiding GMO foods. Oftentimes, when I lecture and ask the question as to why GMOs are a danger, I don’t really get much of an answer. So in today’s presentation I’d like to focus on actually why it is that GMO food represents a threat to your health. What is the real danger of GMO, and again is this just being discussed because it’s trendy? What is going on when we are consuming GMO foods?
So let’s talk about what exactly this is all about.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the prevalence of autism continues to rise here in America. Their surveillance study identified autism spectrum disorder in an incredible 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls).
Clearly, no one yet knows the cause of autism, but more and more research is pointing to the possible connection between autism risk, and exposure to the herbicide glyphosate, the active ingredient in the common weed killer Roundup. Continue reading
Glyphosate is the world’s most widely produced herbicide and is the primary toxic chemical in Roundup, as well as in many other herbicides. In addition, it is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is used in more than 700 different products from agriculture and forestry to home use. The Great Plains Laboratory offers a urine test that will measure for glyphosate levels in your body. You can learn more about the test here.
I recently had the great pleasure of discussing Glyphosate and its impact on human health with Dr. Stephanie Seneff of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Seneff’s work focuses on the role of toxic chemicals and how they can affect the environment, and importantly, your health.
We spoke at length about her work, including the potential link between conventional farming, pesticide use, and autism. I found this talk to be an invigorating and very informative conversation, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
Today’s interview is with my good friend, Jeffrey Smith.
The leading consumer advocate promoting healthier, non-GMO choices, Jeffrey Smith’s meticulous research documents how biotech companies continue to mislead government leaders and safety officials to put the health of society at risk. Jeffrey’s feature-length documentary, Genetic Roulette — The Gamble of Our Lives, links genetically engineered food to toxic and allergic reactions, infertility, digestive disorders, and numerous health problems that have only increased in their incidence since genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were introduced. As you’re planning your New Year’s Resolutions, consider my list of suggestions for 2016:
- Exercise – Yes, you’ve heard it so many times before, but our understanding of what exercise does to enhance health is undergoing a revolution. While its been recognized for decades that aerobic exercise in particular is associated with risk reduction for various inflammatory and degenerative conditions, including type 2 diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, chronic back pain and even low libido, the breakthrough has been the discovery that aerobic exercise actually changes the expression of our DNA! These changes in gene expression turn on pathways that increase our body’s production of antioxidants while reducing inflammatory mediators and amping up detoxification pathways. Yes, it’s easier to take a pill or even a nutritional supplement, but the science supporting what and how exercise does its magic is really compelling. So moving forward, I’d like you to consider 20 minutes of aerobics, every day. Continue reading
Glyphosate, the patented herbicide now used around the world, is the active ingredient in the more commonly recognized product known as RoundUp. RoundUp kills those nasty weeds that want to grow in our gardens, around our fruit trees and along our streets. We’ve got to get rid of weeds at all cost!
RoundUp is what’s in the tank on the backs of those people spraying the verdant median of our roadways. Yes, I’m talking about the same RoundUp that you can buy right off the shelf at your neighborhood Home Depot or any number of other garden stores. It’s sold right out in the open and we’re encouraged to buy it despite the fact that it represents an incredible threat to our health.
Glyphosate, you may recall, was determined to be a “probable human carcinogen” by the World Health Organization publishing in the journal Lancet Oncology in March of this year.
But here’s what’s even more concerning about glyphosate. It turns out that the research indicating the danger of this chemical is not really telling the whole story. Continue reading
