Ever since I discovered Grain Brain, my life has changed for the better. I’m 35 years old, and I have suffered from severe and regular migraines for as long as I can remember. Two months ago I read the book and I decided to start a gluten-free diet that was low in carbohydrates, and just four days later I began to feel great! I had more energy and no headaches, it was so incredible. I have lost weight too!
We’re certainly hearing a lot about the nutritional supplement, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), as of late, and with good reason. The clinical application of CoQ10 has now been validated in many conditions, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, diabetes, chemotherapy, and periodontal disease. It’s now being explored for therapeutic efficacy in such diverse entities as immune function, migraine prevention, high blood pressure and even sperm motility.
CoQ10 is found in virtually every cell in the body, where it plays a pivotal role in the process whereby the cell is able to convert fuel into energy. Beyond this obviously critical function, CoQ10 also serves as one of the body’s most crucial antioxidants, protecting every cell against the damaging effects of chemicals called free radicals. So it’s no wonder CoQ10 is receiving so much attention.
CoQ10 is manufactured in the body, and levels of this life-supportive chemical are enhanced when CoQ10 is consumed. Lower levels may be associated with the use of various medications including:
- Statin drugs used for lowering cholesterol. These include Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocor, and Mevacor. Continue reading
It’s wonderful to hear of the myriad conditions that were solved for Jesse just by eliminating gluten and wheat from his diet. – Dr. Perlmutter
In 2006, I realized that wheat was affecting my health. Still, I kept playing the “on again, off again” game of eliminating wheat for long periods of time, only to find myself binging on it a short while later. I began to notice that the periods that I experienced suffering were lasting longer after each binge.
The final straw came this past January. My suffering was so horrible I almost checked into the hospital. I had horrible, constant migraine headaches that caused my to stay in bed for hours during the day. I was blowing chunks of mucus from my nose every two minutes. My sinuses were swollen. My head was hot and tingly. This went on for six weeks.
Fortunately, I saw your PBS special. I immediately bought a copy of Grain Brain. After your special was over I took your advice and bought some eggs (I was eating vegan at the time). I felt so sick but I managed to drag myself out of bed and take public transportation to a food store that sold cage-free, vegetarian-fed eggs. I went, totally, gluten-free. My condition improved, remarkably. The migraines are gone. My sinuses cleared. I lost weight, naturally.
Having recently seen your special BRAINCHANGE, and finding it very interesting, I wanted to share my story and the long road to my diagnosis of celiac disease.
As a teenager, I experienced migraines with visual aura, which became more frequent as I got older, and with no root-cause found. I had some occasional stomach/GI problems, but nothing indicating celiac. In my thirties the migraines became more frequent, almost a daily problem, and I also had become anemic, and diagnosed with ataxia. It wasn’t until I saw a liver specialist, who did a large number of blood tests, that I was tested for celiac disease tested. In March 2010, I was diagnosed with celiac.
So I’ve been on a strict gluten-free diet for over 3 years now, and those migraines with aura haven’t occurred, my balance is fine, and my liver enzymes have been normal.
