Debi W.

I am thankful for discovering the information revealed in Grain Brain and Wheat Belly books! It has truly been life changing!! I am a 57 year old female and have always been a health nut. My eating habits and weight were considered to be far superior to the mainstream American diet.

A short version of my story is that I began suffering daily from extreme pain/sensitivity in my temples & head. After a year of medical leave, I was ultimately let go from my corporate position (stress exacerbated my pain) and found myself struggling daily to cope with my physical condition. Over the past four years, I was examined by 24 people with “Doctor” in front of their names, along with 12 others that I would classify as “medical professionals” (therapists, psychiatrist, acupuncturists, specialized massage therapy, chiropractors, etc.). It should be noted that I was treated by 5 different neurologists during this time!

My journey to health has been a lengthy, frustrating and discouraging one.  My symptoms were unique and (at the end of the day) ALL the doctors and medical professionals had NO idea what was wrong with me. I had sleep studies, 2 special mouth guards made for TMJ, Botox shots in my temples and jaws, MRIs, CAT scans, numerous X-rays, nerve blocking shots in my scalp, expensive blood tests, consults with facial experts, eye exams, was hospitalized with migraines, laser treatments for head & neck, too many prescriptions to count (most of which, after reading the drug warnings, I choose not to take!), hormonal supplements & herbal remedies….etc. One of the most discouraging visits was to an allergist with 30 years experience who refused to test me for ANY food sensitivities. That was in December 2013, and I was starting to give up hope that I would EVER get well. Continue reading

Inflammation – Strong Relationship to Dementia

Inflammation is a process with which we are all familiar. Whether from an insect bite or an arthritic joint, we associate inflammation with the typical observations of pain, redness, and swelling as well as loss of function.

In Grain Brain, as well as my recent PBS program, BrainChange, I described that this very same process, inflammation, is actually a pivotal player in such diverse brain conditions as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and even autism.

That said, the most fundamental take home message of all my media outreach is to convince everyone willing to listen that you’ve got to do everything possible to reduce inflammation. And that means a diet rich in inflammation-reducing foods like healthful fats, minimal in carbohydrates and strictly gluten-restricted.

Camille L.

Camille”s story really packs an emotional punch. It’s simply miraculous to read about how her change diet has enabled her to do so many things she had previously counted out. – Dr. Perlmutter

I was recommended Grain Brain by a friend. Although I usually order books through the library and wait patiently for my turn, for some reason this time I immediately went to my Kindle and ordered Grain Brain. I spent the next few days staying up into the wee hours of the morning engrossed in the book. I cried when I read that you had helped people with my disease, Dystonia. Suddenly things started to make sense to me.

It took my 3 years to get a clear diagnosis, and I am currently going into my fifth year of dealing with the torture of this disease, Dystonia. I have focalized dystonia, mostly situated on my right side. I have tried many things to eradicate this illness, all to no avail. Your book made sense to me because the few times where the disease was all but ridden from my body were when I was eating a diet heavy in meat protein, vegetables and minimal grains.
