Fasting for Brain Health

If you’re new to Grain Brain and eating for brain health, then you may not know about the first step that’s included in the Grain Brain diet, which is a 24-48 hour, water-only fast. There’s a lot of science out there (and some of it is available here on the site) that demonstrates the health, and specifically brain, benefits of fasting, including enhancing genetic pathways activated by caloric restriction. Watch this video to learn more.

As always, keep in mind that fasting should only be undertaken in consultation with your personal physician.

Stay Hydrated!

There are lots of adages about how much water we should be drinking on a daily basis. It seems like every magazine, TV show or blog suggests a new amount that each and every individual should try to intake regularly. However, all of our bodies are different, and that means we don’t all need to be drinking the same amount of water. Here’s a simple tip to help you remember how much to drink. Find your body weight, halve it, and drink that many ounces of water/day. For instance, if you weight 180 pounds, make sure you have 90 ounces of water/day.

One note: for every caffeinated beverage you consume, be sure to drink an extra 12-16 ounces of water.
