The Empowering Neurologist – David Perlmutter, MD and Dr. Sam Berne

Chronic eye conditions affect more than 10 million people in the U.S. alone, yet many of these instances are preventable. Yet, many standard treatment methods treat symptoms but fail to address the causative factors. For other conditions, such as macular degeneration, common advice from an eye health professional is to ‘just monitor it.’ But it turns out that the eyes, like the brain, have a remarkable ability to grow new neurons and regenerate at any age.

In this episode, Dr. Berne explains his science-backed and holistic approach to eye health. He covers everything from how to prevent and reverse eye disease to how to improve your vision in old age.

It’s wonderful to see these two doctors join forces! My father was a patient of Dr. Perlmutter’s and I have been a patient of Dr. Sam Berne. Both doctor’s, in my opinion, compliment each other in their approach to patient care and knowledge of holistic health. This video is well worth watching!

    • David Perlmutter

I’m glad to hear you are a testimonial to Dr. Berne’s work!

  • Kat Milacek

there are two conversations going on at the same time! I can’t hear the message.

  • LB

My be it much better not to work with computers at night but in case you do so there is a possibility to shift to ‘night shift’ orange light now. The question is how effective is it…

    • David Perlmutter

A helpful setting for sure, but your point is valid. More science needed!

    • Dr. Sam Berne

Hi LB, yes research suggests that blue light that is emitted from digital devices may be the most disruptive at night. Blue blocking glasses filter out a percentage of the blue light emitted, and the “night modes” found on apps and digital devices reduce the percentage of blue light emitted. However, neither of these fully eliminate all blue light, so the effect of blue light would not be fully eliminated even with these modes. The research on the exact effectiveness of these different forms of blue light filtering products is still in its early stages.

Is there a transcript for these videos?

    • David Perlmutter

In the lower-right hand corner of the YouTube frame is a button that reads “CC”. This will turn on closed captions, but there is no full transcript at this time.

My mother’s father advocated for limiting the use of eyeglasses for the very reasons Dr. Berne gives, that it would weaken your eyes. This is the first time I have heard an eye doctor proclaim that advice! Thank you so much. I am passing this along to everyone I love. Many thanks to Dr. Perlmutter for the information!

    • David Perlmutter

Love your information and need some more Dr. My husband has Parkinson’s and I’ve been listening to you for a while now and have been trying to get him to take magnesium which he’s finally doing. After 11 years from diagnosis his meds have been upped for the first time. I’m getting worried about his future and wondering if you can tell me if there’s anything else he can do to keep symptoms at a minimum? Thanks for any help you can suggest.

Are there any foods that support healing of the eye post stroke (Weber’s) that damaged medialis and superior oblique? Eye movement has improved 3 months after. Doing eye exercises 6x day. Focus good. Pupils reactive. Any knowledge is appreciated.

  • Jerry Bloodworth

Thank you Dr. Berne and Dr. Perlmutter. Earlier in this segment Dr. Berne mentions Vision Therapy and our family can attest to how great this works. Our daughter struggled early in life with reading and saw major improvements in focus and concentration which resulted in higher grades. “C” student to A/B honor roll within a 12 – 18 month period. Similar story for our youngest son labeled ADD who went on to be valedictorian of his college class. For parents, there is hope! Drugs and corrective visionwear are not always the answer. Through Vision Therapy and nutrition our kids and I have seen vast performance improvements in our vision that has translated to success in mental, physical and overall better health. Thank you both for the work that you do!

    • Dr. Sam Berne

So glad for your family Jerry!

  • Jo Merriam

Thank you, Drs. Berne and Perlmutter! Four years ago, I moved to a small town high up in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. I don’t know all the reasons, but very few Ecuadorians wear glasses, and hardly any of them use contact lenses. Very, very few of the elderly have vision problems. I know that nearly all food is organically grown, and the air and water are crystal clean. There are no “factory farms” for meat. All meat animals are raised their whole lives in lush green pastures. Nearly all fruits and vegetables are grown on small family farms and sold at the local outdoor markets. Ecuador is totally “wired” and everyone has smart phones, tablets and computers. It would be interesting to see a study on comparing the differences between the folks in these mountains and the average people in North America.

I understood that the medication for glauchoma can cause acetylocholine deficiency which has a major impact on the rest/digest side of the autonomic nervous system. This seems to be the case with my Father In-Law and he went into a very fast heart beat . . . even ablation treatment! Can you talk about how often you have seen this circumstance?

  • Sal

What do you recommend for nearsightedness? How much of these nutrients should I take? What eye exercises should I do? My eyesight is -2 (last time I checked).
