An Important Supplement for Parkinson’s Patients

Parkinson’s disease – a progressive disorder of the nervous system – is a debilitating illness that affects thousands of Americans. Unfortunately, when many patients come to me explaining what medications they are taking for this disease and I learn that they are treating the symptoms and not the underlying illness.

New science is increasingly pointing to the benefits of CoQ10 as a treatment for Parkinson’s. Learn how we can treat the fire, as well as the smoke.

Many years ago, I started taking CoQ10, because I was on statins and read how important it was to take CoQ10 when a person is on statins. Even though I stopped those meds, I continued on CoQ10. Now that I am retired, I am trying to save money by cutting down on the supplements I take daily. Do you think it is worth it for me to continue to take CoQ10?

  • Rich Linkemer

I am a 78 years old male, and Wheat Free for almost 2 years. NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE! I am only taking a baby aspirin once a day. I quit taking all of the Statins 2 years ago (muscle cramps at night), beta blocker (stent 15 years ago) and all supplements.

I am beginning to forget names and places, but still feel fantastic playing golf and bridge.

I also stopped taking COQ10, do you think it will increase my ability to remember names and places?

  • Rich Linkemer

BTW, DR.Perlmutter I have read your book and Wheat Belly from cover to cover and thanks to both of you DR’s I will never go back to WHEAT.
Also, I spend the winter in Naples, and if you play golf, lunch or dinner with people who think you are great I would like you to be my guest.

    Vs. K 2 ?

    • kayde

Is k2 good to treat Parkinsons

  • Robert Good

What do you think about Vitamin K2 vs K as pertains to calcium distribution in the body, especially the bones and arteries?

1200 mg is a lot of pills….would taking Ubiquitol instead of CoQ10 cut down the milligrams any?

  • Carol

My husband is 77 and was diagnosed with Parkinsons 14 years ago. What dosage of COQ10 would you recommend?

    • David Smith

      1200 mg daily

      • david

Carol your husband needs to take ubiquinol Q10 start at 300 mg daily then second week 600mg up to 1200 mg daily will improve PD. Use over the age of 25

        • David

Carol I want to make a correction if over the age of 25 must use ulbiguinol 200 mg first month than 400 mg second month than 600 mg third month take 3×200 mg daily.

I’m a 69 year old female just diagnosed with parkinsons is there any other supplements you can recommend

    • Lynn Dell

http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/34/12/2614.full This study and others point to type 2 diabetes increasing the risk for Parkinson’s. They suggested general inflammation or mitochondrial dysfunction as possible etiologies, or underlying connections between type 2 and the increased risk. If you have read Grain Brain recall the thesis that inflammation is the cornerstone of neurodegenerative diseases, and the type 2 is connected and contributes to the disease on account of it being both caused by, and contributing itself, to neurodegenerative inflammation. IOW, it’s a vortex that feeds on itself and spirals out of control.

What I would do if faced with your diagnosis is follow the Grain Brain protocol including the supplements in the book. And I would still take co q 10. I’m taking it now for my heart health, and would continue to do so. I would also look for the closest functional medicine doc and put myself under his or her care. And I would continue to take my blood glucose levels several times a day.

I hope things go well for you!

    • David

Ulbiguinol Q10 used by people over the age of25 it’s bio availability

  • Lynn Dell

Here is the opposing view, published this year: http://www.alzforum.org/news/research-news/coenzyme-q10-strikes-out-phase-3-parkinsons. For the record, I take co q 10, for my heart. I saw how it helped a relative with congestive heart failure.

    • kayde

Hi Lynn, Just read the article. I was just about to order some coq10 now i’m not sure what to do

      • Lynn Dell

kayde, hi. I couldn’t sleep, so decided to do some reading on the disparity between the youtube and the link I read yesterday. I’m just writing some thoughts out here in *general*, not sure what you should do either, but here goes:

To forestall criticism of Dr, Perlmutter’s youtube presentation from others, please note that his was produced in January of 2014, and the link I cited was put up in March of 2014. New information comes out all the time, and we have to constantly be trying to disprove and falsify information that is out there, not to be disagreeable, but simply because that is what science is bound to do.

I don’t know what to make of the studies, because I lack the equipment to analyze research. Here are some possibilities:

        1. Something else, not Co Q, was slowing the progression of Parkinson’s in the 2002 study.

        2. Co Q is necessary to slow the progression of Parkinson’s, but it acts in synergy with some other medication(s) or supplementation(s) to augment its effect, and we don’t know what that is (those are) yet.

        3. Point 3. is separate, but relates to point 1. above. Co Q has been fairly established to be necessary for other aspects of health, (especially heart health), and because it was increasing cardiac health of participants in the 2002 study, you saw a slowing of the disease process.

And there are other reasons. Lots of them, including error.

This very easy to read link is quite useful: http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/coenzyme-q10/evidence/hrb-20059019

Some years ago, observing how just after several days of adding co q 10 to my mother’s diet made her leg and ankle swelling all but vanish, and gave her more energy (in addition to being chained to the rest room for a time as she was excreting the excess fluid), and I was convinced this supplement does have a role to play in some people who have congestive heart failure.

If you read other places, you will find people saying that our heart especially requires co q 10, and it lessens as we age. It is a supplement, not essential, meaning our bodies produce it, and some of us as we get older benefit from adding it to our diets.

People on statin drugs need it because of the depletion that occurs when taking statins.

This link may be helpful if one is on other meds and is wondering about co q 10 (especially the last few panels of this link) – http://www.healthline.com/health-slideshow/coq10-and-statins

My best guess to reconcile the 2002 study cited in Dr. Perlmutter’s youtube and what current research has shown (and this is a wild guess) is if you help the heart so that circulation, your so-called energy levels, and elimination of waste products, and fluid balances are improved, then perhaps you are also slowing down the progress of other disease processes.

My personal verdict: I am far more concerned about pre-diabetes and cardiac health in my life than I am about Parkinson’s disease, so I am VERY PRO taking co q 10. And if I totally lick whatever issues I have, I will still be aging, and plan to take co q 10 to assist with healthy aging.

I hope my musings and the link chasing are helpful to you in making your decision!

        • Lynn Dell

I knew I shouldn’t post when I’ve lost sleep! The YouTube was made several days ago and the other link was posted in March. It would be interesting to get in the weeds of all the research to figure out why the ultimate conclusion is that co q 10 isn’t helpful and why the first study looked so promising for Parkinson’s.

          • David

            Try ulbiguinol Q10

  • Henry

“”I just googled the subject and received conflicting comments. One said the
Program has been discontinued. Which is it?

  • jmartin49

Unless I’m reading this wrong, the March 24 article in JAMA Neurology (please see reference at http://www.alzforum.org/news/research-news/coenzyme-q10-strikes-out-phase-3-parkinsons) seems to refute your claim that Co Q10 can slow down Parkinson’s disease progression. Can you please comment on this apparently contradictory finding. Thanks.

    • David Perlmutter

I absolutely agree that this new report does show a contradiction. This is the same research group that did the study I describe in this post. The story continues to evolve and your point is well taken. Thank you

You said that gluten can cross the blood-brain barrier. I’ve read that HIV medications cannot cross. Thus, HIV is never totally cured. Why can’t researchers attach HIV meds to gluten molecules to get them across the barrier to cure aids?

  • Allison

Is it better to take Ubiquinol rather than Co Q10?

  • Maggie

My husband was diagnosed of Parkinsons disease nearly 7 years ago, when he was 49. He had a stooped posture, tremors, right arm does not move and also a pulsating feeling in his body. He was placed on Senemet for 8 months and then Siferol was introduced and replaced the Senemet, during this time span he was also diagnosed with dementia. He started having hallucinations, lost touch with rreality. Suspecting it was the medication I took him off the Siferol (with the doctor’s knowledge) and started him on PD natural herbal formula we ordered from NEWLIFE HERBAL CLINIC, his symptoms totally declined over a 3-4 weeks use of the Newlife Parkinsons disease natural herbal formula. He is now almost 57 and doing very well, the disease is totally reversed! (Visit their website www . newlifeherbalclinic . com)
